In an era where cybercriminals can now clone your voice or your face with a few lines of code, the battlefront in cybersecurity has shifted. Traditional phishing emails have evolved into deepfake-enabled deception campaigns that can simulate CEOs on video calls or replicate a trusted colleague’s voice on WhatsApp.
This shift is no longer speculative or reserved for tech thrillers. It’s happening now—and it’s costing organizations millions. Phishing has always preyed on trust. But the trust exploited today isn’t just in text. It’s in sight and sound. Using generative AI tools, cybercriminals are able to produce stunningly convincing replicas of real people—CEOs, politicians, financial officers—speaking, acting, and requesting urgent transfers or confidential access.
The infamous 2024 Hong Kong deepfake scam, where a finance executive was tricked into wiring $25 million during a fabricated video call with a fake CFO and team, was not an isolated case. It was a warning of how blurred the line between digital illusion and reality has become.
Africa, too, has become a hotbed for such fraud. As detailed in our white paper, deepfake impersonations of high-profile figures like Patrice Motsepe and Elon Musk have been used to promote fake investments. At Luno, a leading cryptocurrency platform, a staff member narrowly avoided executing a high-value transaction after receiving a deepfake voice note disguised as an executive instruction. These examples showcase the disturbing power of AI when weaponized against unsuspecting staff.
The stakes are especially high in regions rapidly digitizing their economies. Deepfakes are increasingly being used to circumvent biometric verification—face scans, voiceprints, and even fingerprints. Smile ID’s detection systems flagged a sharp spike in deepfake biometric fraud across over 110 million ID checks in 2024 alone, signaling an alarming trend.
This is not just a technical problem—it’s an existential one for trust-based systems. When identity can be synthetically mimicked, verification itself becomes vulnerable. As the white paper notes, entire fraudulent ecosystems have emerged, offering “deepfake-as-a-service” tools that allow bad actors to generate lifelike personas in real time.
In South Africa’s 2024 general elections, a deepfake video of former U.S. President Donald Trump falsely endorsing a local party reached 159,000+ views, sowing confusion and undermining public trust. Elsewhere, police departments report that scammers have cloned the voices of officers to intimidate civilians into fake fines or arrests.
These events show that deepfakes are not only attacking wallets—they’re eroding public confidence, civic processes, and brand reputations.

If a video call or voice note demands immediate action, it must be verified independently. Callbacks, passphrases, and dual-channel confirmations should become routine—not optional.
Second, organizations must invest in deepfake detection tools capable of flagging subtle inconsistencies in facial movement, blinking patterns, speech rhythms, and metadata. These tools, coupled with anomaly-based monitoring and endpoint controls, offer a first line of defense.
Finally, we must limit the data we hand over to attackers. Executives should audit their digital footprint—public interviews, social videos, media appearances—and reduce the abundance of training data available to deepfake engines.
Training is now critical infrastructure. Just as we taught employees to spot phishing emails, we must now educate them to detect fabricated faces and cloned voices. It’s about arming people with the knowledge to pause, question, and verify—because that pause could prevent a breach.
